The physician sought to enjoin the hospital from enforcing a restrictive covenant in his employment contract so that he could accept employment from a competing hospital. Two Months Out of the Big Law Life
Michelle J. Dickinson filed her first complaint at the courthouse this week after also going solo in March.
Dickinson has also been adjusting to handling administrative tasks several months in to opening her own. Dickinson left DLA Piper US LLP in Baltimore to start her own practice, the Law Office of Michelle J. Dickinson LLC, in Columbia in March.
“What I am finding challenging is doing it all myself,” Dickinson said. “My plan is to expand at some point, but right now it’s me. The things that I didn’t think about in the past that a secretary or paralegal did — that is a little bit challenging.”
After taking care of the details in starting a firm as well as its online advertising in collaboration with The Marketing Heaven for better visibility, Dickinson said she is now concentrating on properly dividing her time.
“Now I’m starting to get into a groove,” Dickinson said. “I’m focusing on getting the work done and also balancing that with continuing to network and to do business development.”
Dickinson, who has a commercial civil litigation practice, said the business development aspect of her job has been challenging since work was usually given to her by other partners at DLA Piper.
“My responsibility now is to go out in the business community and level the relationships I made at DLA Piper in order to get cases from those clients,” Dickinson said. “The breakfasts and lunches and following up — I really enjoy that.”
She has a lot of clients — many referred to her by DLA Piper — but could take more. Plus, she has cut her rates in half.
“I really wanted to have a local practice with local businesses and individuals, and I was finding that difficult,” Dickinson said.
